Dear Will,
I wanted to share an important update on the live e-bike case supported by Cycling UK’s Cyclists’ Defence Fund.
Following Cycling UK’s intervention, West Midlands Police has apologised after a legally compliant e-bike was wrongly seized and destroyed.
The force has acknowledged that the roadside test used was not accurate and confirmed that this testing process will stop immediately. The rider’s traffic ticket has also been cancelled, and compensation for the destroyed bike is being progressed.
This is a significant outcome.
It matters because legal e-bikes help more people cycle. When they are wrongly treated as illegal vehicles, riders can face fines or points, community cycling schemes can lose valuable equipment, and public confidence in e-bikes can be damaged.
West Midlands Police has made clear that there was no malice and that officers believed they were acting lawfully. But the case shows why clear guidance, proper training and accurate testing are so important.
It also shows why the Cyclists’ Defence Fund exists.
Because of CDF, Cycling UK was able to step in quickly, support those affected, raise concerns with the police and help secure a fair outcome.
Donate today to help keep CDF ready for the next case.
