Soul songs - nourished by music from the heart

We do not live by bread alone

Hello Maggie.

Your Soul Food journey continues here as we begin week six. Our theme this week is Soul Songs, reflecting on how we are nourished by musical expression. If you ask a group of people what feeds their soul, one of the most common responses is music.

This coming Sunday we remember Palm Sunday, when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowd praised him with loud voices. Some Pharisees try and get the crowd to be silent, and Jesus tells them that even if the people were silent, the stones would shout out in praise.

If we are church-goers, we raise our voices in song every Sunday. This week we reflect on what it means for our souls to be fed by song.

On Mondays we’ve been sharing a video from Priya Tew, an award-winning dietician, who is sharing a recipe made with easily available ingredients. Here’s this week’s recipe video:

Chickpea stir fry (serves 4)

This vegetarian dish serves four and provides a super healthy three of your five fruit and veggies a day.

Method

Heat the oil in a wok. Cook the onion and garlic, until the onion is soft and then add the ginger.

Stir in the broccoli and peppers (or frozen vegetables).

Add in the soy sauce, water and Chinese 5 spice, plus the chilli if you wish. Let it simmer for a few minutes.

Finish by adding the chickpeas and giving it a good stir through.

Serve with rice or noodles, topped with spring onions if you have them.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic (or 1 tsp squeezy)
  • Half an inch of ginger (or 1 tsp squeezy)
  • 1 head of broccoli
  • 2 red peppers
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp Chinese five spice
  • 1 chilli (or chilli powder/chilli flakes)
  • 2 tins of chickpeas, drained and rinsed

Next week is Holy Week, a time when many Christian communities gather together for food on Maundy Thursday, to remember Jesus’ last meal with his friends.

You might like to consider ways you can invite your wider community to this meal - can you extend the invitation beyond your usual church congregation in some way?

If you’re looking for resources to help prepare a community meal, check out the Susanna’s Table initiative from the Yorkshire West Methodist District.

Every blessing,
