Richard Osman and Age UK Shine a Light on Older Voices in Thursday Murder Club Film

At the UK premiere of The Thursday Murder Club on 21 August, starring Dame Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, author Richard Osman spoke about the importance of amplifying older voices on screen. Age UK national Chief Executive Paul Farmer also praised the film for celebrating the talents of older people and the joy of seeing them take on unexpected roles, like solving crimes.


Islington artists, some of whom have connections with Age UK Islington and Healthy Generations, took part in a special re-creation of a scene from the film at the time of the premiere - in Leicester Square.

Sharing resources from Let's Talk: Asthma, COPD, diabetes

Our August Let’s Talk session offered practical tips on managing asthma, COPD, and diabetes. We heard from the Whittington Health Community Respiratory Team, Dr Grace McGeoch (who runs local diabetes group clinics), and London Met student dietitian working with Age UK Islington’s social prescribing team. Lasting Power of Attorney fees going up on 17 November 
From 17 November, the fee to register a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is increasing from £82 to £92, or £41 to £42 if you are eligible for a discount. There is one for Health and Welfare and one for Property and Financial Affairs. The LPAs provide peace of mind and helps manage your finances e.g. paying rent or bills, healthcare and welfare if you're unable to do so yourself. 


The good news is that the Age UK Islington Planning for the Future team has free appointments (you need to book). Appointments are by phone and in-person - and can provide guidance and help with completing the forms. Find out more about the service or click below to request an appointment.

There are a number of dementia-friendly activities taking place this autumn - from Singing for the Brain run by the Alzheimers Society, a Brain Health programme at the Claremont Project and Kick off with a Verse at Park Theatre. There is also a new council dementia steering group.

Learn to Ride Course

Lee Valley Riding Centre in Leyton is launching a daytime Learn to Ride course for older riders - small groups, social atmosphere, and just £180 (50% off the usual £360). Emergency Alerts - Testing Taking Place

Sunday 7 September 3pm

The UK’s Emergency Alerts System enables people to be contacted via their mobile phone and tablet if their lives are at risk in an emergency. The system will be used to warn you about life-threatening emergencies, such as severe flooding. It will be tested nationally on Sunday 7th September at around 3pm. An Emergency Alert is a loud, siren-like sound with a message on your mobile phone screen.

Seven New Public Toilets in Islington

More clean, safe, free public toilets are set to arrive in Islington, open 24 hours a day. The toilets are free to use and designed to support independent access for wheelchair users. Each unit is self-cleaning, with automatic disinfection of the toilet bowl, seat, floor and walls after every use, and ozone-based night cleaning for added hygiene.
