Orchard Park crossing works

Work starts today (Monday 23 March) to improve safety at the Guided Busway Buchan Street crossing between Kings Hedges Road and Orchard Park, Cambridge.

The re-modelled crossing will include a 3.5m wide path, additional tactile paving, fencing and a chicane which aims to slow down cyclists and Voi e-scooter users on approach to the Guided Busway and direct the attention of those using the crossing towards any approaching buses. Surrounding hedges are also being cut back as part of these safety improvements to increase visibility for bus drivers as well as those walking, wheeling and cycling in the area.

During the works, which are anticipated to take around two weeks, the Buchan Street Guided Busway crossing and the Kings Hedges Road crossing will be closed. The public are asked to use the crossing at Chariot Way next to the Orchard Park West bus stops whilst the works take place.

The Orchard Park spur of the Busway will remain open to buses throughout these works.

Separation fencing installation update

The Addenbrooke’s bridge separation fencing work continues on schedule. We would like to thank everyone for their patience whilst works take place.

Works on the Pagram Way, Orchard Park to Cambridge Road, Impington section are due to be completed by 17 April, including some additional work around the Orchard Park junction. This section of the Busway between Histon & Impington and the Orchard Park turning will then reopen to buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

Following this crews will move the works compound south of the Guided Busway Orchard Park turning and start installation of separation fencing near Cambridge Regional College. The section of the Busway between Cambridge Regional College and Milton Road will close to buses but the maintenance track will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Buses will serve temporary stops for Cambridge Research Park. We will share further details about phase 7 via our website before the start of works in this area.

Impington boundary fencing

We are replacing the temporary boundary fencing near to the levelling ponds in Impington with permanent fencing

We will be putting in a 1.8m high green mesh fence between the field and the Guided Busway. There will be gaps in the new fence to allow small mammals to pass through.

We do not need to remove any trees or vegetation to install the fence.

Work is anticipated to take two weeks and will be completed under the current closure.

Histon & Impington public engagement

We will be re-scheduling the public engagement event which we originally anticipated holding in March to May.

Following the local survey and stakeholder engagement, we anticipate creating a new formal crossing at the Community Orchard. A new crossing in this location was the most popular choice with both stakeholders and those responding to the survey.

We will share designs for the new crossing and footpath improvements at this public drop-in session. Holding this event in May means we can provide an update on related active travel connections to Girton which are currently under development.

Easter works

No changes to existing Busway closures are anticipated over the Bank Holiday weekend. Work will continue to install the fencing on Good Friday and Easter Saturday.

Path flooding

We continue to monitor flooding on the maintenance track.

The section between St Ives Park & Ride/Second Drove and Fen Drayton Lakes near Holywell reopened following the clearance of debris from the path. Whilst the water levels have gone down, the section between Holywell and Mow Fen Drove, Swavesey remains closed for everyone’s safety. Should the current dry weather continue, we anticipate clearing flooding debris and reopening the maintenance track in full later in the week.

For your own safety and others, we continue to urge people not to trespass on the Busway.

We will let people know when the path reopens via our social media channels.
