East and South Asian Heritage Month
September is East
and South East Asian Heritage Month, a celebration of East and South East
Asian heritages, cultures and histories. The theme for this year is “Evolving
Threads”, which honours “the ways in which our stories, actions and
solidarities are continuously woven together across time, place, and
community.”
Why not
stop by your local library or visit our catalogue
online to browse our many fiction and non-fiction books about East and
South East Asia? From history to memoirs to novels to cookery books, we have a
range of titles by authors from this part of the world, and about its very
diverse heritages and cultures.
Lastly, did
you know that we’re launching a monthly Mahjong club in St Neots? The first session will take place on Tuesday 8

Staff Training Closure
Cambridge Central Library Closed for Staff Training
On Monday 7 September, Cambridge Central Library will be closed from
9:30am to 2pm for staff training. We will re-open in the afternoon as usual
from 2 to 6pm.
Our other libraries will be open as usual that morning: Milton Road and Rock Road libraries will be open from 9am, and the Clay
Farm Centre library from 9:30am.

Meet author and
broadcaster Horatio Clare, in conversation with Dr James Gardom, chaplain of
Pembroke College, discussing Horatio’s book We Came by Sea. It documents
the author’s journeys between Dover and Calais and around the UK, meeting British
people responding to those who arrive here in ‘small boats’, and finding
stories of kindness not always reflected in the headlines.
We’re delighted to be partnering with the Cambridge Film Festivalfor a very
special free family event as part of their 45th
anniversary programme. Join us at Cambridge Central Library on Sunday 27
September for one of two one-hour sessions (12:30-1:30pm or 2-3pm) featuring
30 minutes of arts and crafts followed by a screening of The Tiger Who Came to
Tea.
Join us for a
series of free talks in partnership with Cambridge University’s Centre for
Landscape Regeneration, at Cambridge Central Library.
On Friday 25September, 2-3pm, join us as we begin to explore the unique
heritage and landscape of the Fens. Dr Phil Stastney will describe a
fascinating archaeological journey through the Fens. For more

National Coding Week
For this year’s National Coding Week (14-20 September), we’d
like to highlight our Code Club offer.
If you're between the ages of
7-17, you’re invited to come along to Cambridge Central Library and
learn how to code or work on your own projects with support from our
volunteers. Code Club is free and runs every other Saturday during term time
(10:30-11:45am) in our EverySpace area on the third floor. The autumn term will start from Saturday 26 September.

Heritage Open Days
Every September thousands of volunteers across England
organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It's your
chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are free to explore.
Events will be running from 11-20 September in various historical sites across England. This
year's theme for Heritage Open Days is 'everyday histories', exploring daily working life through the
ages. There’s lots going on around the county, from looking around March Railway Station to Ramsey Abbey
Gatehouse.

leading cause of heart attacks and strokes.That’s why it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly
and know your numbers.If your blood
pressure is high, you can get support to bring it under control and reduce your
risk of serious health problems.
In Cambridgeshire, anyone aged 18 or over can borrow a blood
pressure monitor from their local library.Ask library staff for information or visit the blood pressure monitor loan scheme webpage.
Health Kiosks
Have you tried using our health kiosk at Huntingdon Library?It can measure your blood
pressure, heart rate, body fat and body mass index (BMI).If your readings are high, the kiosk will tell
you where to find further support.This summer, we have two more kiosks at Arbury Court Libraryand Bar Hill Library.Visit
one of these libraries and try the kiosk out!
