Mental Health Awareness Week

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year's theme is ‘action’.

An action however big or small can help us to feel hopeful, rewarding, progressive and purposeful.

It's vital for us to take action but we couldn’t do it without our wider community. And every action matters, whether its hosting a fundraising tea party, volunteering or taking on a challenge. These are all actions that help people recover after conflict or disaster.

Our individual actions matter, when we come together we are even more powerful.

Volunteering for Your Mental Health

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, but its benefits extend beyond those receiving help.

Research suggests that acts of service can reduce stress, boost happiness and foster a sense of purpose, making volunteering an important action for yourself and for others.

Our volunteers generously share their time, skills and knowledge across a wide range of roles and activities. Fundraising is one way of getting involved. Read about Luna and her owner, Tom Miles, 49, who are walking the 300‑mile Cornwall coastline.

Become an Ambassador

Our ambassadors play a hugely important role within ShelterBox. You amplify the voices of the people affected by disaster and conflict, you share their stories, raise awareness of the work we do, inspire fundraising and inform and educate about what we do.

The Importance of Neighbours

A recent study found that contact with neighbours is associated with increased positive emotions and can help feelings of isolation and loneliness.

This Mental Health Week we’re calling on our supporters to take action and reach out to their neighbours for a ‘Tea in a Tent’. The idea is simple, share tea and tasty treats with your friends and community and raise money to support people affected by disaster.

As well as raising money for our vital work around the world, you’ll be bringing your community together, improving people’s mental health and wellbeing and hopefully yours in the process too.

Supporting the Mental Wellbeing of our Response Workers

Our response teams are deployed all over the world to support people in need of emergency aid and shelter. This can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be difficult to witness such loss.

That’s why we provide psychological support, using a trauma focused peer support system known as TRiM. This helps us monitor and support people’s wellbeing and mental health through conversation.

“The sense that I “couldn’t do enough” to help people had a big impact. I have benefitted greatly from receiving TRiM, as it helps me understand and articulate my feelings”.
