Welcome to this month's events bulletin where the focus is on the last of our engagement opportunities on adult social care reform: Smith Square Debate: Care where we live: what needs to change in local government for adult social care reform?
This debate on Tuesday 24 March, will consider the role of local government in a future and reformed system. Senior and prominent figures from across the world of adult social care will share their thoughts with a brief to be bold and radical and delegates will be encouraged to contribute and challenge where their thoughts differ. Findings from this and all the events in the series will be shared with the Casey commission. Join us for an evening which promises to be stimulating, thought-provoking and inspiring as we all strive to deliver a system of adult social care in which people are best supported to live the lives they want to lead.
We also would like to highlight The flexible plastics challenge for councils: data, costs and markets virtual event on Thursday 26 March 2026. From April 2027, councils will have to expand household recycling services to include flexible plastic items such as crisp packets and bread wrappers, as part of the mandatory Simpler Recycling reforms.
This virtual session will present an overview of research carried out by Valpak for the LGA into flexible plastic and the impact of the new duty on local government. The session will cover modelled cost estimates for collection, sorting and reprocessing, which can be used as a guide for local authorities in planning their services and budget requirements. Practical guidance will also be provided to assist local authorities in implementing the service.
