Dear colleague,
"Professional learning is most effective when it is focused on the real problems of practice that participants face in their own work."
Helen Timperley et al., 2007
For
many senior leaders, those problems of practice sit in areas where
accountability is high but technical expertise sits elsewhere. Leaders are
expected to make confident judgements, provide assurance, and explain decisions
clearly, often relying on reports, dashboards and professional advice rather
than direct operational knowledge. Navigating that balance well is now a central part of the leadership role.
This
understanding of how leaders learn best sits at the heart of ASCL’s
professional development offer and informs the launch of a brand‑new programme
developed in partnership with Tracey Field Consulting. Leading and Managing an Education Estate:
Strategic Leadership, Risk and Accountability has been designed specifically for senior leaders who
hold responsibility for the estate but are not estates specialists. It responds
directly to shifting national expectations and the increasing emphasis on
leadership visibility, risk and assurance.
Rather
than focusing on technical detail, the programme supports leaders to understand
where accountability sits, develop clearer oversight, and build confidence in
making and defending strategic decisions. Through expert input, structured
reflection and peer learning, leaders are supported to strengthen their
judgement in an area where clarity and confidence matter.
In
line with Timperley’s insight, this is professional learning rooted in genuine
problems of practice, supporting leaders to lead with confidence with the
responsibilities they carry.
Best
wishes
