CURRENT ISSUES

Independent School Standards

In April, the DfE published an updated version of the Independent School Standards: Guidance for independent schools, the non-statutory guidance on how schools can comply with the Independent School Standards. Please see here a summary of the main changes to the guidance.

Consultation responses

ASCL has written responses to a large number of consultations recently launched by the government. These responses can be viewed here.

Overseas schools’ group

Earlier this year, the government launched its International Education Strategy, a document which outlines its plan to increase exports, support skilled employment and broaden access to high‑quality education provision. As part of this strategy, the government has created an Education Sector Action Group (ESAG), a ministerially-chaired forum which brings together industry, government, and representative bodies from across the education sector to tackle key concerns and identify opportunities for partnerships. ASCL General Secretary Pepe Di’lasio and I have been invited to act as adviser members, working with the group on how to develop and deliver the educational action plans.

ASCL online forums for leaders in independent schools

In June, we are holding two online forums for leaders in the independent sector. The next Business Leaders’ Online Forum for business leaders in independent schools will take place on 3 June (please sign up here), whilst the next Independent School Leaders’ Forum takes place on 18 June (please sign up here). The focus for this forum will be on leaders sharing what they may have learned over the course of this academic year which has made them a better school leader, and which they are willing to share with others in the forum.

Supply Agency Framework

The DfE recently announced a new Supply Teachers and Education Recruitment Framework which places a cap on supply agency fees. Unfortunately, after consulting with the DfE, we can confirm that the framework is not currently available to independent schools. This is something which we feel is incredibly short-sighted and we hope that the restrictions are reviewed so the framework does become available to all schools regardless of type.

Become an ASCL Local Representative

We are keen to expand our network of independent school ASCL Local Representatives. Local Representatives are ASCL members who are usually serving school or college leaders who volunteer to represent members. Local Representatives are fully trained and accredited by ASCL and are supported with advice and guidance.

Those currently in the role consistently highlight how rewarding it is, not only in supporting their peers, but also through the valuable networking and professional development opportunities it offers.

More information about the role can be found here. If you are interested in becoming a Local Representative, please complete this form which asks for some basic information from you.

We would be delighted to talk to you in more depth about the role and answer any questions that you may have. Please email employers@ascl.org.uk or call 0116 2991122.
