China's Rising Consumer Categories

Insights from Bloomberg Intelligence

From sportswear to cosmetics and travel - learn more about the rising stars amongst Chinese consumer categories.

Discover more with the latest market findings from Bloomberg Intelligence who will present a keynote speech at China Consumer 2025.

Sportswear and Fitness

China's growing fitness trend is a movement expected to last into 2026 and beyond, with a preference for affordable premium goods. Sportswear looks set to maintain strong growth and consumer spending. Categories like outdoor activities such as hiking are gaining particular traction amongst health conscious Chinese consumers.

In particular, sportswear brands - including
Nike, Adidas, Fila, Salomon, and Lululemon - are benefiting from China’s ongoing fitness and wellness trends. These companies are expected to outperform in discretionary categories even if staple purchases remain under pressure.

However, as Chinese consumers become more selective in their discretionary spending,
sportswear retailers will need to increase their marketing investments to stimulate demand. Labels with a strong brand presence and differentiation are likely to fare better.

Cosmetics

In cosmetics, a shift toward high-margin functional skincare is favoring both international brands like Shiseido and L’Oréal’s SkinCeuticals, as well as local alternatives such as Giant Biogene’s Comfy and Shanghai Jahwa’s Yuze. These brands combine scientific positioning with accessible price points.

Going forwards, global brands will likely
prioritize the launch of new, mid- to premium-priced skincare products under their popular labels. This move is a direct attempt to re-engage affluent buyers and stimulate spending, and if successful, can drive stronger sales in the second half of the year compared with the first.

Travel

Chinese travelers are cutting back on overseas purchases and could redirect an estimated USD $27 billion back into the domestic market.

At the same time, relaxed visa policies, attracting a surge of foreign visitors, are poised to channel an additional USD $15 billion into local spending. A prime opportunity for international brands engaging the domestic market.
