A better future through innovation: Oxford’s response to global challenges

Welcome to this special edition of Catalyst, which focuses on our newly published Impact Report 2025.

From the rollout of the world’s first high-efficacy malaria vaccine, to breakthroughs in cell and gene therapies, clean energy, and neuroinclusive design, the report captures Oxford’s innovation and its measurable, global impact.

Centred on our Theory of Change, the report is structured around five stages: inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and impact, and shows how world-leading knowledge and research become companies, partnerships, jobs and solutions driving every one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Explore the full report and see how Oxford’s innovation is having an impact.

Innovation is a vital part of growth

Oxford’s innovation ecosystem has never been more vital - to our region, our country, and the world.

In her foreword to the report, Baroness Nicola Blackwood celebrates 19 new companies launched, over £450 million raised, and impact spanning all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

‘As Chair of OUI, I am inspired daily by the dedication of our colleagues, partners, and entrepreneurs, and […] the vital role Oxford’s innovation plays in addressing global challenges - and the part OUI plays in ensuring that impact is realised across industries, communities, and nations.’

Malaria vaccine success

A partnership between the University of Oxford and the Serum Institute of India has delivered the world’s first high-efficacy malaria vaccine, offering up to 75% protection in young children. Enabled by a licensing agreement facilitated by OUI, the vaccine is now being produced at scale for under $4 a dose.

Impact Case studies

Each year, OUI surveys our spinouts and startups to capture how Oxford’s research is creating real-world impact. Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as our framework, we measure how these companies are improving lives, driving sustainability, and delivering economic and social benefit worldwide.

Impact needs to be illustrated through stories as well as through data: the case studies below showcase examples drawn from our more established outputs and companies, highlighting the sustained impact of OUI’s work.
